How to renew your Los Angeles business tax registration
The yearly renewal and business tax return, based on last year's gross receipts. In your first renewal, the city also collects "back tax" for your first year, measured by that first year's receipts.
- Agency
- City of Los Angeles Finance
- Who has to do it
- Every business with an LA City BTRC must file every year, even with no revenue. The city's small business exemption (gross receipts of $100,000 or less) only applies if you file on time.
- If it's late
- The city says late filing or payment can bring penalty and interest charges, and the small business exemption only applies if you file on time.
Step by step
Open the city's renewal page
In the Business Tax Renewal row, click Business Tax Renewal. Log in with your BTRC account number (or FEIN, which is your business's EIN), plus your business's street number and ZIP code.
Confirm your details
Check your business details, then continue through the information pages. Single Category Filing: answer Yes only if one of your activities brings in 80% or more of your gross receipts and you want to report all your receipts under it, then select that activity. Otherwise, answer No and leave the table blank.
Enter last year's gross receipts
Gross receipts means the money your business received for its sales and services, without subtracting expenses. Enter last year's gross receipts for each activity the city lists for you (names like "Broker/Telemarketing" are its labels), then your total from all locations, inside and outside Los Angeles. Creative artist question: answer Yes if those receipts were $300,000 or less, including $0. Dulybook's revenue total can help, but check it against your records first.
Small business exemption
The city says no tax is due if your total gross receipts were $100,000 or less and you file on time. Not sure if it fits? Ask a tax professional.
Generate, pay, and copy the confirmation
Click Generate My Tax Renewal, review the tax (a first renewal can include back tax for your first year), then pay online by credit or debit card, or print the form and mail a check (a mailed renewal isn't complete until the city receives it). Copy the confirmation number.
